Brain Ages 15 Years Faster in High-Pollution, Low-Income Communities

A striking finding from the ReDLat2 initiative demonstrates the profound impact of environmental factors on neurological aging. Participants living in high-pollution, low-income areas showed brain ages 8-15 years older than their chronological age, regardless of whether they carried protective genetic variants against dementia.

Using advanced neuroimaging and machine learning algorithms to calculate biological brain age, researchers found that the environmental exposome—the cumulative effect of pollution, poverty, and social deprivation—overwhelms genetic protection. Air pollution combined with socioeconomic disadvantage produced the most severe acceleration in brain aging. The study of 12,847 participants across 13 Latin American countries reveals that genetic advantages cannot compensate for sustained environmental stressors, highlighting the urgent need for interventions targeting environmental health equity and pollution reduction in vulnerable communities.
