China has achieved a remarkable public health milestone, reducing infectious disease burden by 50% over the past two decades. However, this overall success masks a critical emerging challenge: older adults are now bearing a disproportionate share of remaining disease burden. This concentration reflects China’s rapidly aging population and the heightened vulnerability of elderly individuals to severe respiratory infections. Health policymakers must now pivot their strategies from broad infectious disease control to age-specific prevention and management approaches. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions that address the unique infectious disease challenges facing older populations as nations continue demographic transitions.
