According to data presented at ESCMID 2026, significant obstacles prevent infectious disease professionals from attending essential scientific conferences. Cost barriers were cited by 85 percent of respondents as the primary limitation, while inclusion challenges and sustainability concerns affected 72 percent and 68 percent respectively. Political constraints also impacted participation, cited by 45 percent of potential attendees.
These barriers emerge at a particularly critical moment, as infectious disease conferences have become vital platforms for countering health misinformation and maintaining scientific integrity amid unprecedented challenges. The Munich gathering provided essential optimism to the research community while highlighting the need to address accessibility issues.
Experts stress that removing these participation barriers is essential to ensuring that evidence-based perspectives reach the broadest possible audience of researchers and clinicians. Addressing cost, sustainability, and inclusion challenges could strengthen the global infectious disease community’s capacity to combat misinformation and advance collaborative research.
