Recent data from the MERIT trial, published in NEJM, reveals compelling efficacy metrics for obinutuzumab in primary membranous nephropathy treatment. The study documented a striking disparity in clinical outcomes: 67.2% of obinutuzumab-treated patients achieved complete or partial remission at 24 months compared to only 42.1% receiving tacrolimus.

This 25.1 percentage point difference translates to a 60% relative improvement in treatment success, making it one of the most significant treatment advances in nephrology. Beyond remission rates, obinutuzumab demonstrated sustained proteinuria reduction throughout the follow-up period, indicating durable clinical benefit.

The trial’s international scope—encompassing 87 centers across 16 countries and 929 patients—strengthens the generalizability of these findings. Notably, safety profiles remained comparable between groups, eliminating concerns about tolerability trade-offs.
