A critical surveillance gap threatens disease control efforts: while animals displaying clinical symptoms of chronic wasting disease achieve near-perfect detection rates, asymptomatic carriers—estimated at 65% undetected by standard screening protocols—continue spreading infectious prions unidentified.

The data reveals a stark disparity in detection capacity. Animals with visible clinical signs reach 100% detectability, yet silent carriers carrying full infectivity remain largely invisible to conventional surveillance systems. Current protocols require tissue sampling of 85% of wildlife populations to adequately capture asymptomatic cases, a logistically challenging benchmark for most wildlife management agencies.

This detection crisis underscores an urgent need to modernize screening methodologies. Enhanced protocols incorporating broader tissue sampling, molecular diagnostics, and targeted surveillance in high-risk populations are now essential to prevent further uncontrolled transmission across wildlife and potentially into human populations.
