According to industry reporting, dozens of hospitals have had their 340B drug price breaks eliminated by Eli Lilly due to failure to provide mandatory claims documentation. This enforcement action underscores a critical compliance challenge: 78 percent of hospitals report data reporting complexity as a major barrier to 340B participation, while 72 percent cite insufficient IT infrastructure and 65 percent face resource constraints.

For safety-net hospitals serving predominantly uninsured and low-income populations, losing these federally mandated discounts translates directly into higher drug acquisition costs. The financial impact threatens medication accessibility at precisely the institutions most relied upon by vulnerable patient groups.

Manufacturer enforcement of claims data requirements, while necessary for programme integrity, may inadvertently widen healthcare disparities if institutions lack the technical capacity to comply. The tension between compliance demands and institutional capability demands urgent policy attention. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
