Severe periodontitis affects approximately 19% of the global adult population, representing a substantial public health challenge with significant variation by geographic region. Southeast Asia bears the highest burden at 22% prevalence, followed by Central and South America at 18.5%, while Europe reports 14.7% prevalence according to 2019 Global Burden of Disease data.
Despite the widespread impact of this chronic oral disease, regenerative treatment options remain severely limited. A promising development comes from emerging research on a plant-derived biomaterial combining jackfruit latex, pomegranate peel extract, and simvastatin. Preclinical evidence suggests this composite material may address multiple disease mechanisms—infection, inflammation, and tissue loss—in a single therapeutic approach. While human clinical trials remain years away, this research signals potential expansion of therapeutic options for patients with periodontitis.
