GLP-1 Use Associated with Substantial Reduction in Impulsivity-Violence Link

Rutgers University researchers found an association between GLP-1 receptor agonists (Ozempic, Wegovy) and weakened impulsivity-violence links in observational analysis. A new observational analysis from Rutgers University reports a substantial weakening of the association between impulsive traits and violent behaviour among individuals using glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, compared to non-users. This finding emerges from examination of adults with documented impulsivity and aggression histories, providing preliminary evidence for a potential neurobiological connection.

GLP-1 receptor agonists—medications including Ozempic and Wegovy—exert effects across brain regions critical to impulse regulation, with demonstrated activity in the prefrontal cortex at 95%, ventral tegmentum at 88%, and nucleus accumbens at 82%. Despite the compelling preliminary association, researchers stress that no causal relationship has been established. Off-label use for behavioural indications remains unsupported, and the team calls for rigorous randomised controlled trials before any clinical translation. Current evidence-based approval remains limited to diabetes and weight management applications.
