A comprehensive analysis of nearly 48,000 HIV-positive patients across China has uncovered substantial gaps in integrated sexually transmitted infection management. The research, conducted over 14 years across 15 provinces, reveals that 39.7% of patients experienced recurrent STIs—a rate that underscores systemic challenges in coordinated care delivery.
The study, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific, compared systematic STI screening protocols with symptom-based testing approaches. Findings demonstrated that routine screening identified 23% more infections than relying on patient-reported symptoms alone. This significant gap highlights the critical importance of proactive screening in HIV care programs.
Dr. Wei Chen, principal investigator at the National Center for AIDS/STD Control and Prevention, emphasized that these persistent infection rates represent “a critical challenge for HIV care programs.” The research provides unprecedented longitudinal data to inform evidence-based improvements in integrated care strategies.
