Marketing vs. Reality: Why Magnesium Form Doesn’t Target Specific Organs

The supplement industry’s claims that specific magnesium forms target distinct organs—threonate for cognition, glycinate for sleep, taurate for cardiac health—lack scientific foundation, according to new analysis in the Georgian Medical Journal.

Once ingested, all magnesium salts dissociate in stomach acid, releasing identical magnesium ions regardless of their original chemical form. The organic ligands accompanying these ions (citrate, glycine, taurine) separate and follow independent metabolic pathways, bearing no relationship to marketing claims about organ-specific delivery.

What does matter is bioavailability. Clinical studies show absorption rates vary by form—citrate achieves 85% absorption versus oxide’s 43%—but this difference reflects solubility in gastric acid, not targeted tissue accumulation. Understanding this distinction helps clinicians guide patients toward evidence-based supplement choices rather than marketing narratives.
