Molecular tumor boards—collaborative teams of pathologists, oncologists, bioinformaticians, and genetic counselors—are emerging as a critical bridge between genomic discovery and clinical implementation in precision oncology. According to a new meta-analysis published in PLOS Medicine, these multidisciplinary teams successfully translate complex tumor genomic data into actionable treatment recommendations, leading to improved patient outcomes.
However, a significant equity gap threatens to limit precision oncology’s benefits to well-resourced healthcare systems. The analysis reveals that 92 percent of healthcare systems cite resource constraints as a major barrier to molecular tumor board implementation, alongside challenges in bioinformatics expertise and staff training. Researchers and health policy experts emphasize that scaling these teams through digital platforms and hub-and-spoke models may democratize access to genomic-guided care across diverse healthcare settings.
