The 36th ESCMID congress in Munich has reinforced the essential role that in-person scientific gatherings play in combating health misinformation and protecting research integrity. As infectious disease specialists gathered to share evidence-based findings, The Lancet Infectious Diseases editorial team highlighted how these conferences serve as critical counterbalances to politicization and scientific constraints affecting the field.

Conference attendees reported renewed inspiration through exposure to cutting-edge research and invaluable personal connections with international colleagues. The meeting occurred amid ongoing challenges from pandemic-era politicization of public health measures and rising medical misinformation in public discourse.

Despite their documented scientific value, infectious disease conferences continue to face significant barriers to participation, including cost considerations, inclusion challenges, and sustainability concerns. Yet experts emphasize that these gatherings remain irreplaceable for maintaining scientific rigor and fostering collaborative advances in infectious disease research.
