The XPRIZE Healthspan competition represents a landmark investment in aging science, mobilizing research teams worldwide to develop interventions that restore youthful function in older adults. With $101 million in total prize funding distributed through 2030, the initiative targets three critical areas of age-related decline: cognitive function, muscle strength, and immune system performance.

Dr. Jamie Justice, scientific director at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, oversees the competition’s rigorous framework, which requires teams to demonstrate measurable functional improvements within specific timeframes. The competition structure includes milestone prizes for incremental breakthroughs alongside grand prizes for transformative results. Justice emphasized that the most promising approaches combine multiple modalities—from pharmaceutical interventions to lifestyle modifications—rather than relying on single-intervention strategies.

However, Justice cautioned the public against unproven treatments, stressing the importance of evidence-based approaches as legitimate research progresses. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
