The NHS England has established the first-ever online hospital trust dedicated exclusively to virtual specialist care, representing a watershed moment in the organization’s digital transformation agenda. This milestone follows years of accelerated digital adoption driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and reflects the sustained commitment to modernizing healthcare infrastructure.

The Online NHS Trust operates through the NHS App infrastructure, offering specialist consultations delivered via video technology without requiring traditional hospital visits. This integrated platform architecture enables seamless patient access to expert medical opinions across multiple specialties, fundamentally changing the delivery model for specialist care in the UK.

The appointment of John Browett as founding chair brings proven organizational leadership and strategic vision to this unprecedented venture. The trust’s establishment marks a measurable shift in NHS capacity—from hospital-centric models to distributed, digital-first care delivery. As virtual care adoption accelerates globally, the NHS Online Trust positions the UK healthcare system at the forefront of clinical innovation and patient accessibility.
