According to tracking by the Movement Advancement Project and Center for American Progress, restrictions on gender-affirming care have spread rapidly across the United States. Currently, more than 20 states have implemented medical bans, 15 states have enacted age restrictions, and 13 states have passed provider liability laws targeting such care.
Physicians argue that these legal barriers have unintended consequences that undermine child safety. When care restrictions prevent treatment within coordinated medical systems, patients increasingly seek services outside regulated healthcare environments, removing clinical oversight and safety monitoring. This fragmentation of care may introduce greater medical risk rather than protect vulnerable youth.
Medical organizations emphasize that evidence-based care incorporates mental health assessment and informed consent—elements that cannot be effectively implemented when legal prohibition supersedes clinical judgment.
