Popular Cognitive Supplement Linked to Mortality Risk in Men, New Research Warns

A large-scale epidemiological study has uncovered an unexpected association between elevated tyrosine levels and reduced life expectancy in men, challenging the widespread perception of this amino acid as a safe cognitive enhancer. Tyrosine, a key ingredient in nootropic supplements marketed for focus and mental performance, has been linked to an estimated one-year reduction in life expectancy among men with higher circulating levels.

The finding has prompted significant questions about the long-term safety profile of amino acid supplements, which are heavily marketed for cognitive enhancement and athletic performance despite limited long-term mortality data. While researchers emphasize that the study is observational and does not establish direct causation, the results suggest that current assumptions about supplement safety may require reassessment. Experts recommend exercising caution with long-term tyrosine supplementation pending further investigation.
