First, while spinal strokes remain exceptionally rare—affecting fewer than 0.2 per 100,000 children annually—their potential severity warrants heightened clinical vigilance. Second, emerging evidence suggests viral infections can trigger inflammatory responses affecting spinal vasculature, occasionally culminating in thrombotic complications even in previously healthy adolescents.
Third, early recognition of neurological symptoms is paramount for patient outcomes. A 14-year-old’s case resulting in over 158 days of hospitalisation and paralysis from the neck down exemplifies this principle. Clinicians should maintain suspicion for sudden onset weakness, sensory changes, and autonomic dysfunction during post-viral recovery periods and escalate evaluation promptly. While post-viral neurological complications remain uncommon, their recognition can facilitate timely intervention and optimise patient prognosis.
