Researchers have documented promising clinical efficacy for savolitinib, a selective MET tyrosine kinase inhibitor, in treating patients with MET-amplified gastric and gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma. The phase 2 trial results, presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting and published in Nature Medicine, represent a significant step forward in precision oncology approaches to gastric malignancies.

MET amplification occurs in approximately 2-4% of gastric cancers and has historically presented limited targeted treatment options. The trial’s comprehensive design, incorporating both exploratory and pivotal phases, allowed researchers to optimize dosing strategies and identify appropriate patient populations. This methodological approach has become standard practice for biomarker-driven oncology trials.

These findings underscore the growing importance of molecular profiling in gastric cancer treatment strategies, potentially offering new hope for patients with this specific genetic subtype.
