A landmark analysis of wearable data from 71,000 adults tracked over 3.5 years reveals a critical insight about the sleep-activity relationship: sleep quality predicts increased physical activity the following day, but exercise does not reciprocally improve that night’s sleep. This directional asymmetry, published in Nature Communications Medicine (2025), fundamentally challenges the conventional bidirectional model of sleep and exercise benefits.
The findings highlight a widespread adequacy gap in the population. Only 12.9% of participants consistently met both sleep quality and physical activity targets simultaneously, with 87.1% failing to achieve either goal. These results suggest that interventions prioritizing sleep quality optimization may be more effective for promoting daily movement than traditional exercise-first approaches.
