A new qualitative study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas reveals that patients with coccidioidal meningitis in California’s Central Valley face substantial obstacles in accessing and maintaining care. Rather than clinical factors alone, systemic healthcare barriers are emerging as primary drivers of poor outcomes for this life-threatening infection.
The research, based on in-depth interviews with affected patients and caregivers, identified multiple critical challenges spanning the patient journey from diagnosis through long-term management. Healthcare system navigation problems topped the list of reported barriers, followed closely by difficulties accessing specialized care and managing insurance coverage. Geographic isolation and language barriers further complicate care delivery in the region.
Coccidioidal meningitis requires lifelong antifungal therapy and careful coordination across multiple providers, making these systemic improvements essential for improving patient outcomes in this endemic region. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
