Why copper deficiency is missed in anemia workups: (1) Copper-dependent enzymes control ALL iron transport—block copper, iron gets trapped in tissues while patients become anemic. (2) Blood tests look identical to iron deficiency; doctors reflexively prescribe more iron. (3) Bariatric surgery, parenteral nutrition, and high-dose zinc are the main causes, yet copper is rarely tested. Check copper status.
