A fundamental principle in exercise physiology challenges the popular narrative that stress should be minimized for optimal health. According to the International Society of Sports Nutrition Position Stand (2026), hormesis—the concept that moderate biological stress triggers adaptive responses—explains why neither complete rest nor excessive training produces lasting gains.

The body adapts not by avoiding challenges, but by responding to precisely calibrated demands. During moderate training, controlled increases in reactive oxygen species act as signaling molecules, prompting the upregulation of antioxidant defenses and mitochondrial growth. However, this adaptation only occurs when recovery is treated as an active phase—not a passive pause. Sleep, nutrition, and deliberate rest periods are where physiological gains are consolidated.

For clinicians and health professionals, the implication is clear: patient guidance should emphasize optimal stress dosing and structured recovery over either sedentary recommendations or intense, unsustainable exercise protocols.
