A landmark study published in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle challenges conventional understanding of age-related muscle loss, revealing that the nervous system—not muscle tissue alone—holds the key to maintaining strength in older adults. Researchers analyzing sarcopenic, nonsarcopenic, and master athletes found that motoneuron excitability, measured through persistent inward currents and motor unit discharge rates, fundamentally determines functional strength capacity independent of muscle mass. Master athletes demonstrated remarkable preservation of neural function across advanced ages, suggesting that decline is not an inevitable consequence of aging. The findings point to a dual mechanism of strength maintenance: long-term resistance and high-intensity exercise protect both neural architecture and muscle tissue. These insights reshape clinical approaches to sarcopenia management, emphasizing the importance of preserving motoneuron function alongside muscle-building interventions in aging populations.
