Cancer patients and their healthcare providers now have actionable evidence for combating chemotherapy-induced cognitive decline. A new clinical trial reveals three critical insights for protecting brain function during treatment. First, structured home exercise programs directly improve attention and reduce mental fog—a practical intervention accessible to most patients. Second, understanding the prevalence of this challenge is essential: 80% of chemotherapy patients experience cognitive decline, making proactive prevention a priority in treatment planning. Third, exercise-based interventions outperform pharmacological approaches like low-dose ibuprofen for cognitive protection, establishing physical activity as the preferred evidence-based strategy. These findings suggest that oncology teams should routinely prescribe tailored exercise programs as part of standard supportive care. By implementing structured physical activity early in treatment, patients can maintain cognitive function and quality of life throughout their cancer journey.
