What Patients Should Know: Three Critical Facts About Cannabis and Sleep Dependency

Recent neurological research highlights three essential findings for patients considering cannabis for sleep management. First, cannabis reduces rapid eye movement (REM) sleep by approximately 70 percent—a critical phase for memory consolidation and emotional regulation. Second, young adults and veterans represent the highest-risk populations for developing sleep-related cannabis dependency, requiring heightened clinical vigilance during assessment and treatment planning.

Third, withdrawal-induced insomnia can persist for six or more weeks following cannabis discontinuation, creating a significant barrier to cessation and driving relapse in dependent users. These findings emphasize the importance of evidence-based alternatives to cannabis for sleep disorders, including cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia, sleep hygiene optimization, and physician-supervised pharmacotherapy when appropriate. Patients should discuss these risks and alternatives with their healthcare providers before initiating cannabis use for sleep.
