The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Hepcludex (bulevirtide-gmod) injection, marking the first-ever FDA-approved treatment for chronic hepatitis delta virus infection in adults. This landmark decision, granted to Gilead Sciences based on robust clinical trial evidence, represents a watershed moment for patients worldwide who have long lacked therapeutic options for this aggressive form of viral hepatitis.

Hepatitis delta virus is a satellite pathogen that requires hepatitis B co-infection to replicate, resulting in more severe liver disease progression than hepatitis B alone. Patients with HDV co-infection face accelerated timelines to cirrhosis, liver failure, and hepatocellular carcinoma. The approval applies to adults without cirrhosis or with compensated cirrhosis, offering hope to millions suffering from this rare but devastating condition.

This breakthrough addresses a critical unmet medical need affecting an estimated 15-20 million people globally, according to WHO data. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
