NHS mobile screening trucks in supermarket car parks have detected over 10,000 lung cancers, with 77% caught at early stages when treatment is most effective. The NHS mobile lung screening initiative delivers three essential clinical and economic benefits for healthcare systems and patients. First, the programme has identified 10,678 lung cancers since launch, enabling intervention at a population scale previously unachievable through traditional referral pathways. Second, 77% of detected cancers are identified at stages 1-2, when survival rates are highest and treatment burden substantially reduced.

Third—and critically—early detection generates significant economic value. Treating early-stage lung cancer costs substantially less than managing advanced disease, with estimates suggesting £25,000-£35,000 savings per early detection compared to advanced treatment protocols. This efficiency, combined with improved clinical outcomes, demonstrates that mobile screening represents both a clinical and fiscal imperative. Patients aged 55-74 with smoking histories should prioritise accessing these convenient, community-based screening opportunities where available.
