The MHRA’s approval of Wegovy tablets offers three critical takeaways for patients and healthcare providers. First, this represents the inaugural approval of a GLP-1 receptor agonist in tablet form specifically for obesity treatment in the UK, expanding therapeutic options beyond injectable medications. Second, the oral formulation provides a practical alternative for patients who prefer tablets to weekly self-administered injections, potentially improving treatment adherence and patient convenience.

Third and importantly, regulatory approval by the MHRA does not automatically mean NHS availability. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) must conduct a separate evaluation assessing cost-effectiveness and clinical value. This additional review stage ensures that treatment decisions align with NHS resource allocation priorities and evidence-based guidelines.

Patients interested in this therapy should consult healthcare providers about its potential suitability and timeline for NHS access.
