Data from transplantation registries reveal a sobering reality: organ recipients on chronic immunosuppressive therapy face significantly elevated cancer risk across multiple malignancy categories. While skin cancers demonstrate the highest relative risk at 20-50 times greater than the general population, peripheral T-cell lymphoma presents a 2-5 times increased risk—a substantial elevation that warrants clinical attention.
This statistical finding gains particular significance when contextualized alongside other immunosuppression-related malignancies. Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders carry 10-30 times increased risk, and Kaposi sarcoma demonstrates 8-20 times elevated incidence. The relatively lower but still meaningful risk of peripheral T-cell lymphoma suggests this malignancy may be underdiagnosed due to limited surveillance awareness.
These epidemiological patterns highlight the pressing need for comprehensive cancer surveillance protocols tailored to transplant populations. Current monitoring strategies may inadequately capture peripheral T-cell lymphoma cases, potentially delaying diagnosis and reducing treatment efficacy.
