Common Plastic Chemical Linked to Long-Term Anxiety Effects in Developmental Study

New research reveals that early-life exposure to diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), a ubiquitous plasticizer in consumer and medical products, may produce lasting behavioral changes that persist into adulthood. In a controlled animal model study, male rats exposed to DEHP during the perinatal period exhibited significantly elevated anxiety-like behaviors months after chemical exposure had ceased, characterized by reduced exploratory activity and increased freezing responses.

DEHP is widely present in everyday products including medical devices, vinyl flooring, children’s toys, and food packaging—making exposure nearly unavoidable in modern populations. These findings add to growing evidence suggesting that developmental windows represent critical periods of vulnerability to chemical neurotoxicity. While animal models cannot directly predict human outcomes, the study underscores the importance of understanding how ubiquitous environmental exposures may influence neurodevelopmental trajectories and behavioral health across the lifespan.
