First, prolonged close contact did not guarantee secondary infection when coughing frequency remained low—challenging the notion that time spent near infected individuals is the primary transmission risk. Second, infected donors demonstrated low aerosol viral shedding despite confirmed influenza infection, indicating that not all infected individuals shed virus at equal rates. Third, viral emission intensity appears to predict transmission likelihood more accurately than contact duration alone. These findings suggest that infection control strategies should prioritize identifying periods of high viral shedding and coughing rather than enforcing blanket proximity restrictions.
