The Trump administration is proceeding with a relaunched LGBTQ+ option within the nation’s 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, but notably without The Trevor Project—the organization instrumental in developing the original specialized routing infrastructure. The 988 line, operational since July 2022 through the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), was designed to provide accessible mental health support with connections to affirming counselors. The exclusion of The Trevor Project from the relaunch raises significant concerns among mental health professionals and advocacy organizations about service continuity and the quality of crisis support for LGBTQ+ youth, one of the highest-risk populations for suicidal ideation.
