New research reveals a striking statistical association between Alzheimer’s disease and genetic mutations typically linked to blood cancers. A comprehensive genomic analysis of 2,847 adults aged 65 and older found that Alzheimer’s patients carried blood cancer-associated mutations at significantly higher rates: 43% versus only 25% among healthy controls—a 72% increased likelihood.
These somatic mutations, which accumulate after birth, create a hyperinflammatory state in brain immune cells called microglia. When activated abnormally, these cells release excessive inflammatory signals that damage neurons and accelerate cognitive decline. The data also showed intermediate prevalence in patients with mild cognitive impairment at 35%, suggesting a potential disease progression pathway. This statistical pattern strengthens the biological plausibility that targeting these inflammatory pathways could offer new diagnostic markers and therapeutic interventions for Alzheimer’s prevention and treatment.
