A landmark 42-month cohort study of 678 elderly adults without baseline diabetes found that bedroom light averaging 5 lux or more—roughly the brightness of a hallway nightlight—was associated with a 3.74-fold increase in diabetes incidence compared to darker sleep environments. This striking finding challenges conventional assumptions about what constitutes adequately dark sleeping conditions.
The statistic gains particular significance when paired with acute laboratory evidence: a single night of 100 lux bedroom light exposure disrupted insulin sensitivity and altered heart rate variability in healthy young adults. Collectively, these results suggest that cumulative light exposure during sleep may be a modifiable risk factor for metabolic disease, particularly in aging populations.
