As global youth mental health challenges intensify, with 1 in 5 children experiencing mental health conditions, researchers are identifying an underutilized source of emotional support: grandparents. Unlike parents who often prioritize academic achievement and behavioral management, grandparents provide unconditional emotional support that strengthens resilience in young people.

Child psychologists emphasize that intergenerational relationships offer distinct advantages in buffering against anxiety and depression. Meaningful conversations with grandparents, combined with reduced achievement pressure, create safe environments where youth can express concerns openly. As traditional support systems struggle to meet growing demand, the role of extended family relationships has become increasingly important in addressing the youth mental health crisis.
