The Bundibugyo virus disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached a critical acceleration phase, with confirmed cases surging 24.7% in a single week according to WHO’s Situation Report 07 released 30 June 2026. Between 21 and 28 June, 259 new cases were documented, alongside 110 deaths—a 41.2% increase in fatalities that underscores mounting severity.
The outbreak’s geographic footprint continues to expand, now affecting 35 health zones across the DRC. A more concerning development emerged when a physician returning from the affected region tested positive in France, marking the first confirmed case outside East Africa and signaling the international dimensions of this emerging threat.
