The UK has achieved a regulatory first with the MHRA’s approval of the first-ever oral GLP-1 receptor agonist tablet specifically indicated for weight loss and obesity management. Wegovy tablets (semaglutide) represent a significant departure from the previous treatment paradigm, which required patients to self-administer weekly subcutaneous injections.
The approval leverages existing safety and efficacy data from Novo Nordisk’s oral semaglutide formulation, already established in clinical practice for type 2 diabetes treatment under the brand name Rybelsus. This regulatory precedent strengthened the approval pathway for the weight management indication.
While the MHRA clearance represents a major achievement in medication accessibility, NHS coverage will depend on a separate health economic assessment by NICE, which evaluates clinical benefit and cost-effectiveness for the UK healthcare system.
