A landmark study published in Nature Medicine has produced the first comprehensive multiomics characterization of gene-edited pig liver xenografts in human extracorporeal circulation. Four human decedent trials tracked immune activation, coagulation pathway responses, and metabolic parameters during xenograft cross-circulation, establishing a critical baseline for xenotransplantation safety assessment.
The data reveals that immune and coagulation systems activate during xenograft exposure at measurable but manageable levels, while metabolic function remains maintained and xenograft viability is sustained throughout the circuit. These molecular profiles provide the essential biomarker framework needed to predict adverse events and optimize immunosuppressive strategies for future living patient trials. The completion of this multiomics analysis removes a significant knowledge barrier and accelerates the path toward clinical translation of xenograft-based liver support therapies.
