Large Pooled Analysis Links Daily Coffee Consumption to Improved Survival in Colorectal Cancer Patients

A comprehensive pooled analysis of four prospective cohort studies involving 5,442 colorectal cancer patients reveals a significant association between post-diagnosis coffee consumption and reduced mortality risk. Researchers found that each additional cup of coffee consumed daily was linked to approximately 4% lower mortality across the entire patient population.

The analysis identified Stage III colorectal cancer patients as showing the strongest protective signal. These patients experienced a 10% mortality reduction per cup of coffee, with the highest coffee consumers demonstrating a notable 43% lower mortality compared to non-drinkers. Importantly, both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee showed comparable protective effects, suggesting that bioactive compounds—rather than caffeine itself—may drive the observed benefit. While these findings are encouraging, researchers emphasize that the observational nature of the study precludes definitive causal claims and highlight the need for randomized controlled trials and mechanistic investigations in diverse populations.
