German Trial Reports Historic Shift in Lupus Treatment: CAR-T Therapy Delivers Drug-Free Remission

A groundbreaking clinical trial at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg has demonstrated that modified CAR-T cell therapy can achieve complete drug-free remission in patients with severe, treatment-refractory lupus. All 15 trial participants experienced sustained clinical remission following a single infusion of genetically engineered immune cells. This represents the first successful application of CAR-T technology to systemic lupus erythematosus, traditionally managed through lifelong immunosuppressive medications. The therapy works by targeting and eliminating CD19-positive B cells responsible for producing harmful autoantibodies, effectively “resetting” the immune system while preserving protective immune functions. With follow-up periods extending to 24 months, the sustained response rates suggest lasting benefit. This advancement challenges conventional autoimmune disease treatment paradigms and opens new therapeutic possibilities for patients with severe lupus who have failed standard interventions.
