The wellness industry has built a compelling narrative around L-theanine’s ability to boost alpha waves and promote relaxation. Yet a closer examination of the peer-reviewed literature reveals a far more complex picture than product marketing suggests.
Two studies have indeed documented increased alpha wave activity at rest following L-theanine administration. However, this effect appears limited to specific populations and contexts. More notably, subsequent research from independent laboratories found that L-theanine actually decreases alpha activity during cognitive tasks—directly contradicting the relaxation narrative.
Beyond these inconsistencies, the four proposed biological mechanisms explaining L-theanine’s neurological effects remain unconfirmed in humans. The most frequently cited mechanism derives from a single 2002 in vitro study that has never been independently replicated. This gap between marketing claims and evidence highlights the importance of critical appraisal in supplement discourse.
