A new pharmacokinetic study reveals striking cycle-dependent variations in how nasal spray medications reach the female brain—a critical detail conspicuously absent from most clinical trial data and current prescribing guidelines. The research demonstrates that drug bioavailability fluctuates substantially across follicular, ovulatory, luteal, and menstrual phases, indicating profound hormonal influences on central nervous system drug delivery.

These findings highlight a troubling gap in precision medicine: standard dosing recommendations treat all women as a homogeneous population, despite clear evidence of cycle-dependent pharmacokinetic variation. The absence of sex-stratified data in regulatory submissions and clinical guidelines means current prescribing practices may deliver suboptimal or excessive doses depending on when women take their medication relative to their menstrual cycle.
