Nearly Half of HIV-Positive Patients in China Carry Syphilis Co-infection

A landmark 14-year longitudinal study tracking 47,892 HIV-positive individuals across 15 Chinese provinces has revealed that syphilis co-infection affects 45.2% of patients—the highest prevalence among all sexually transmitted infections in the cohort. Human papillomavirus followed closely at 38.1%, while bacterial infections including gonorrhea (22.3%) and chlamydia (18.7%) rounded out the major co-infection landscape.

The research, published in The Lancet Regional Health – Western Pacific, represents the most extensive analysis of HIV-STI co-epidemics in the region to date. Led by the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the study employed systematic screening protocols at HIV care entry and during routine follow-up visits spanning 2010 to 2024.

These findings align with global health patterns observed in similar populations worldwide, yet underscore the specific public health challenges facing HIV-positive communities in Asia-Pacific regions. The high prevalence of syphilis co-infection in particular demands urgent attention to integrated prevention and treatment strategies.
