A new longitudinal study has identified a striking timeline in the development of the gut-brain connection: protective bacterial combinations can be detected within months of birth and are linked to neurodevelopmental outcomes by age three. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about when critical developmental processes begin. The research demonstrates that epigenetic changes present at birth directly influence which bacterial species colonize the infant gut during year one, creating microbial signatures associated with reduced autism and ADHD risk. These findings suggest that early microbiome assessment may provide valuable predictive information for neurodevelopmental health. The study tracks infants from birth through age three, establishing clear correlations between early microbial patterns and later developmental trajectories, highlighting the importance of perinatal health factors.
