The International Organization for Migration’s latest governance assessment identifies three critical implementation challenges that healthcare providers and policymakers must understand. First, regional disparities in implementation capacity are stark—ranging from 85% in Europe to 34% in Africa—reflecting fundamentally different levels of institutional readiness and resources.
Second, health system integration represents the weakest link in global migration governance. Despite recognition of migrants’ heightened vulnerability to communicable diseases, malnutrition, and mental health conditions, fewer than half of countries have incorporated health provisions into their migration policies. This oversight leaves health systems unprepared for migrant patient populations and compounds existing inequities.
Third, a persistent funding gap between policy commitments and actual resources undermines implementation across all regions. Healthcare institutions must advocate for dedicated migration health funding and strengthen capacity-building initiatives to bridge these critical gaps and ensure equitable access to care.
