A landmark study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas reveals alarming rates of healthcare access barriers among coccidioidal meningitis patients in California’s Central Valley. The research found that 85 percent of patients report significant challenges navigating the healthcare system, while 78 percent struggle with accessing specialist care.

Beyond navigation and specialist access, patients face compounding obstacles including insurance coverage gaps affecting 65 percent of participants, geographic distance barriers impacting 52 percent, and language barriers limiting care quality for 38 percent of patients. These systemic challenges are particularly concerning given that coccidioidal meningitis requires lifelong antifungal therapy and complex, coordinated care spanning multiple providers and extended treatment periods.

The findings underscore the urgent need for healthcare system reforms to improve care access and coordination for this vulnerable patient population in the endemic Central Valley region. Read the full article on GMJ Newsroom.
