Scientific comparison chart of magnesium supplement absorption rates

Navigating magnesium supplement recommendations requires separating evidence from marketing. Here are three critical clinical facts:

First, organic magnesium forms absorb approximately 15% more efficiently than oxide due to superior solubility in gastric acid—citrate achieves 85% bioavailability versus oxide’s 43%. Second, regardless of form, all magnesium salts dissociate in stomach acid, releasing identical magnesium ions. The accompanying ligands (citrate, glycine, taurine) separate and follow independent pathways, invalidating claims about organ-specific targeting.

Third, serum magnesium testing provides an incomplete picture of total body magnesium status, as serum levels represent only 1-2% of total body stores and remain tightly regulated by kidneys. When counseling patients, emphasize bioavailability optimization over marketing narratives about cognitive or cardiac targeting.
