The 30-gram-per-meal limit, long presented as biochemical fact, originated from a 2009 study measuring only a 4-hour metabolic window—not total daily protein utilization or long-term muscle adaptation.
Second, the capacity for protein utilization appears context-dependent. Whole-body resistance exercise increases this capacity: 40 grams of whey protein stimulated greater muscle protein synthesis than 20 grams in trained individuals, contradicting the earlier threshold. Third, individual variation matters substantially. Lean body mass, exercise modality, training status, and amino acid composition all influence optimal protein dosing more than any fixed gram threshold.
For clinicians and nutrition professionals, this means moving away from one-size-fits-all recommendations toward individualized assessments that account for training type, body composition, and metabolic status.
