Active individuals lose zinc through five concurrent routes: gastrointestinal secretion (0.5–3 mg daily), sweat (0.5–1.5 mg per training session), urinary excretion, skin turnover, and semen. Combined, these pathways can exceed 2 mg daily—meaning a single high-intensity training day may deplete more zinc than the standard RDA is designed to replace on a sedentary baseline.
The practical implication is clear: athletes following civilian RDA guidelines (11 mg per day) are likely consuming insufficient zinc.
