The human eye possesses a sophisticated natural defence system against blue light damage, one that can be enhanced through dietary choices. Lutein and zeaxanthin, yellow pigments classified as carotenoids, accumulate in the macula and act as biological filters, intercepting high-energy blue wavelengths before they can harm light-sensitive photoreceptors.
Research demonstrates that consistent dietary intake of approximately 10 mg of lutein combined with 2 mg of zeaxanthin daily strengthens macular pigment density over weeks to months. Leafy greens, eggs, and corn provide accessible sources of these protective compounds. Rather than relying solely on external blue-light filtering devices, ophthalmologists recommend supporting the eye’s intrinsic defence mechanisms first through evidence-based nutrition.
